digital girlfriend

The concept of a Digital Girlfriend was totally new to us when we first heard the expression in late 2024.  According to Perplexity, a digital girlfriend is “an artificial intelligence (AI) entity designed to simulate the experience of having a romantic partner. These AI companions are programmed to engage in conversations, understand emotions, and mimic the nuances of human relationships. They are not physical beings but rather digital personas that can be accessed through various platforms, such as smartphones, computers, or smart speakers.”

But as someone wise once said “You can’t sit in the back row of the movies with a digital girlfriend …”

lyrics

You can’t sit in the back row of the movies with a digital girlfriend …

She’s got a voice on the speaker, a smile on the screen,
Pixel-perfect in every frame, but still a little lean.
She’s always there in high-def, clear as she can be,
But I’m reachin’ for a hand that she’ll never give to me.

You can’t sit in the back row of the movies with a digital girlfriend,
Can’t share a look, or feel her lean in.
She’s got a flawless face, but no heartbeat to lend,
Yeah, you can’t hold a memory with a digital girlfriend.

I text her late at midnight, and she texts me right back,
Perfect timing every time, but there’s somethin’ that she lacks.
I’m missin’ that laugh that echoes, that touch that pulls you close,
In a crowded, dark theatre, it’s her absence I feel most.

‘Cause you can’t sit in the back row of the movies with a digital girlfriend,?
Can’t feel the warmth or catch a glance you didn’t intend.
She’s there on the screen, but the feeling won’t send,
Yeah, you can’t hold a memory with a digital girlfriend.
You can’t fill the silence with a digital girlfriend.

She can’t steal my popcorn or whisper my name,
Don’t nudge my arm or make my heart race the same.
In this theatre for two, I’m sittin’ here alone,
A love on a screen just don’t feel like home.

You can’t sit in the back row of the movies with a digital girlfriend,
Can’t share the quiet, or let the night just bend.
She’s perfect in pixels, but too far to defend,
Yeah, you can’t hold a memory with a digital girlfriend

So here’s to the empty seats, and the glow of her face,
To all the things a screen can’t replace.
I’ll be waitin’ in the back row, for someone real instead,
‘Cause you can’t hold a memory with a digital girlfriend.
